The anklet, a type of bracelet worn around the ankle, has been worn by women for centuries. The concept is believed to have evolved in the Middle East from the ancient custom of chaining a womans feet together so that she was forced to walk with small, mincing steps behind her husband to show her subservience and to keep her from running away. Modern anklets are generally composed of thin silver or gold chain-links, leather, and plastics. Selections can be found with small lightweight ornaments attached.
