When looking to buy jewelry, sometimes we want a piece that is unique and different. By “unique”, we don’t necessarily mean jewelry that is unconventional or noticeably unorthodox. We’re looking for something that is charmingly atypical that might be noted upon and complimented, but not grounds for furtive derision. A simple way to obtain this measure of originality is by opting for pieces designed with gemstones that are not commonly used in jewelry. Minerals that can be refined into gems are diverse in so many things… color, transparency, rate of inclusions, brilliance, striation.. on and on, and selecting jewelry composed of these alternative gems offers huge diversity. Examples of gorgeous, rarely used stones include Iolite, a transparent violet blue mineral sometimes called the Water Sapphire; Carnelian, a striated red or orange quartz occasionally used in cameos; and Jasper, a banded stone found in all colors that often seems to form patterns.
